BGCELA Soccer Coach, Carlos Martinez, visits New York
Our soccer coach, Carlos Martinez, was invited to New York, the home of CitySoccer in the Community by Manchester City Soccer team. Paul Jeffries, the director of the program, hosted Carlos for a week. They mixed business, and Mr. Martinez learned about their soccer program and curriculum. This was Mr. Martinez first visit to New York. The picture shows Mr. Paul Jeffries and Mr. Carlos Martinez, visiting Times Square. We are looking forward to welcoming Mr. Martinez back home, and hearing about all the things he learned.

Bella Thorne visits BGCELA

Thank you Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Staples and “Shake It Up’s” Bella Thorne for an incredible afternoon at our club. Bella visited with our Torch Club members as they gave her a tour of the club. Over 130 members eagerly greeted her and listened as she spoke to them about the importance of an education and giving back. She then signed our “Wall of Dreams” and passed out Staples for Students backpacks filled with school supplies.
Mr. Jose Resado, Manager of the Staples store in Monterey Park joined Bella to pass out the backpacks. Mr. Resado also happens to be alum from our club so he spoke about growing up in the club and that the kids should cherish their time here and remember to come back when they are successful adults. He also said they should look him up when they are old enough to work. He wants to hire young people from our community. It was a great way to start the Labor Day Weekend!

Our Soccer teams continue to improve!
Our soccer teams continue to improve. Our newest addition, our cadets, youth ages 4 to 8, won their first tournament on April 19th in the “Partido por la Amistad” against the Club America Academy.
On Saturday, May 26th, our Team 14 and under, won their tournament in the 2nd Annual Club America L.A. Soccer Academy Tournament. They competed against teams from Orange and Riverside
Counties. They were so proud when they received their medals and team trophy. Both trophies are proudly displayed at the club front desk.
The gift of a new soccer pitch by the
Manchester City Football Club continues to attract area youth to join our club and train with our teams.
Our summer program will include week long soccer clinics with pro players and a new summer league will be launched. For more information, please attend a Summer program orientation any Tuesday or Thursday. 6:30pm in English and at 7:15pm in Spanish.

Lakers Viewing Party

The LA Lakers hosted a viewing party at our club for Game 5 against the OKC. Though the outcome of the game was not what we had hoped, the event was festive and brought our club families together.

We set up all of our big screen TVs and projected an even bigger image on the gym wall for as close to a jumbotron feel we could provide.
The LA Lakers staff, Jason and Allison, planned the event and went all out. They provided dinner, brought the championship trophy for picture taking, raffled off autographed items from the Lakers
starting Lineup and if that wasn’t enough, eight of the Lakers Girls came by to sign autographs and even helped serve dinner for over 250 people in attendance.
The evening was hosted by the new Time Warner Sports Anchors, Adrian Garcia Marquez and Francisco Pinto who will now be broadcasting the Lakers games
in Spanish. Dinner was provided by Mexicanos 30-30 Restaurant, owned by one of our club parents.
Thank you to the LA Lakers, Lakers Girls and the Time Warner team for a memorable event thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by our club families.
Also a big thank you to our club team, Carlos, Jorge, Danny, Alex, Isaac, Walter, Maria and Sonia for all their help to set up and supervise the event.

Jessica Garcia receives Americorps scholarship.
Through a BGCA grant, our club was able to enlist Americorps associates to work at our club. We hired club alumni who are currently enrolled in college.
Pictured, Jessica Garcia, a sophomore attending Cal State Northridge, with her Americorps scholarship for completing 900 hours of service at our club. Jessica joined the club at age 10, and was one of our Youth of the Year in 2010.
Other Americorps staff include, Brenda and Brian Aguirre, graduates from Garfield HS. They were club members since age 5. Walter Castillo has completed his Americorps hours and we have now hired him to continue his work in our computer and music programs. Walter is studying architecture at ELACC.
Easter Joy for BGCELA thanks to Ross Associates
Easter Joy for girls and boys thanks to Ross Associates.
Associates from Ross Stores from around Los Angeles County donated over 300 Easter Baskets to our club kids.
Playing the role of Easter Bunny, Mr. Noel Jimenez, organized the efforts of 17 stores. Ross staff donated all the basket fixins and created an amazing variety of baskets for every age, girls and boys.
A parade of Store Managers and District office representatives surprised our kids as they filed in with baskets after baskets. They couldn’t wait for the party to start.
Kids were treated to a pizza party, dance contest, with DJ, Daniel Rodela, a club teen, and the distribution of baskets.
Thank You Ross!
Congratulations to Jamie Lopez
